Arctic Landscapes

I teach in an arts integrated school and since we started integrating the arts into all core subjects, student achievement has dramatically improved, even in my special ed classroom.  We are learning about Antarctica.  This week we created amazing landscapes that were inspired from Dali's Moustache.  We added in the Southern lights and discussed so many art and science vocabulary.  We learned about tints, foreground, middle ground, background, perspective, habitats, Southern lights, and Antarctic animals.  We ran out of time, but I wanted to add in fingerprint penguins, but maybe next year.

  1. This looks amazing!! Do you have to have an arts background to teach at an arts school? This just sounds so cool!!!

  2. Actually, very few of the teachers have an arts background. Most of us learn as we go and we are offered numerous professional development opportunities in the arts (music, visual arts, dance, drama). Every summer we attend a "Summer Intensive" and it's intensive. We learn how to integrate arts in all core subjects and we have the opportunity to sharpen our own arts' skills. It's a lot of fun and a lot of work!
