Trash to Treasure Linky Party

Scipi at Go Figure! is hosting a Trash to Treasure linky party.  Head over to get some great ideas on how to reuse items around the house to make life easier in the classroom.  The idea I want to share is not my idea.  I found it on Pinterest.  (I am now hopelessly addicted!)  There are so many unique and wonderful ideas out there.  No Time for Flashcards has 2 awesome ideas in one.  Whenever you buy a hardback book, take the colorful book jacket that the kids can destroy in 2  minutes flat, and turn it into a puzzle.  She also gives the great tip of adding a magnetic sheet to the back so little ones can work the puzzle more easily.  The pieces will stick nicely to an old metal cookie sheet instead of sliding all over the place.  This is also good for students who have poor fine motor skills.  The students will love constructing a puzzle of their favorite books.  It gives you a basically free puzzle for your classroom out of something you would eventually throw away.  Check out No Time for Flashcards for all of the details and pictures of a puzzle she made.

Constitution Day

Since tomorrow is Constitution Day, I thought I would share a great resource that I found.  This site is free and filled with lessons/activities for every grade level.  I am planning on using a lesson from The Center of Civic Education.  It's all about authority vs. power.  It's in simple language with thought provoking questions which require the students to explain their reasoning.  Check out the site if you need a new lesson!

Seven Things About Me

Teacher Mum has awarded me a Versatile Blogger Award. I am so excited!  I can't believe that others are interested in my blog.  Teacher Mum is also a special ed teacher and her blog has practical tips on teaching and motherhood.

The Rules after accepting the Versatile Blogger Award are:
  • Thank the person who gave you the award and link back to them in your post.
  • Share 7 things about yourself
  • Pass this award along to 15 recently discovered blogs.
Here we go – seven things about myself that you might not know already.
1.  I am the mother of 2 beautiful daughters and a wife to a pretty amazing guy.  My oldest daughter started kindergarten this year and my baby will start kindergarten next August.  (I can't believe how quickly time has flown!)
2.  I love, love, LOVE chocolate and coke, but since I am currently recovering from a kidney stone removal procedure, I can't have either at the moment. :-(  (I think I feel sorrier for my husband and kids!)
3.  I love to quilt.  My favorites are for new babies.  I love the quiet therapy of sitting at my sewing machine.  I wish I had more time for it.
4.  I also love to read.  My new favorite author is Torey Hayden.  She writes nonfiction books based on her experience woking with children in special education.  Her students suffer from various disabilities and most have severe emotional issues.  If you ever want an idea of what special education teachers do on a daily basis, read her books.  You will either love it, or find your nearest special ed teacher and give them a giant hug for all of the things we do that are not "standards based."
5.  I wish I could teach in house shoes.  If I could get away with it, I would never take them off!
6.  I teach in an arts integrated school and love it.  I have no artistic ability at all, but that doesn't stop me!  Since our school changed our philosophy and began integrating the arts into the core curriculum, the students have made amazing progress in all areas.  The special education students have probably made the most significant gains of anyone!  In the last 3 years, I have been able to move 4 students out of my self-contained class back into the regular program with only a few hours (less than 5) of resource support a week.
7.  I am a tv junkie.  I love watching mindless sitcoms!  It's a great way to destress and relax a bit before I can crash out and sleep.
I am passing this award on to the following blogs.  Hop on over and check them out!  Most offer free teaching resources!
4. Kinderglynn

5. Mrs. Rachel's Room

6.  Mrs. Willis Kindergarten

7.  2nd Graders Rock

8.  Education Helper

9.  The Wise Owl Factory

10.  Ashleigh's Education Journey

11.  The Teched Out Teacher

12.  Minds in Bloom

13.  Smarty Pants Teaching Resources

14.  Vintage Teacher

15.  Runde's Room

Web Site Linky Party

With so much technology available, we are crazy not to use it.  I've been looking for great sites that I can use on my classroom.  I thought it would be great to share with everyone and we would all benefit.  Let's make a list of some of our favorite sites that we use in our classroom.  Link up and add your sites.  We will all walk away with a few new sites that we didn't know about.

My favorite sites:
1.  Scholastic  has several language games for pk-1 and struggling students.
2.  Earobics  is great for phonological awareness and pre reading skills.
3.  Starfall is great for beginning readers.
4.  Kidzpage is a great place for games.  Students don't know that they are learning.  There are games for memory, puzzles, brain games, and others.
5.  Read Write Think is a great site for both the students and teachers.  There are games, but there are tons of interactives that you can use for your smartboard/active board.  There are tons of lesson ideas and materials for you to download.  If you haven't been to this site, you really need to check it out!
6.  Fun 4 the Brain has a ton of math games and they are broken down by add/sub/mult/division.
7.  Super Why another reading game.
8.  Toy Theater has several thinking games.
9.  Discovery Education This is a great resource for teachers.  There are short videos on every topic available along with printables, writing prompts, and others.  A must see!
10.  Teachers Pay Teachers This is a wonderful resource for teachers.  There are thousands of free lessons/materials/products available for immediate download.  There are also thousands of materials available to purchase.
